DCI Newsletter Issue #23 - January - April 2025

Hello,

2025 marks a milestone year for the Digital Currency Initiative — our 10th anniversary. Founded in 2015, DCI began with a simple but ambitious mission: to advance open-source, neutral digital currency technologies that empower individuals. A decade in, that mission feels more vital than ever.

There are many ways to measure the impact of the last ten years:

  • 540,169 Bitcoin blocks mined

  • Hundreds of students taught and mentored — and thousands more reached online

  • Dozens of research collaborations with universities, governments, nonprofits, and industry

  • Hundreds of open-source codebases and research reports

We’ve captured some of this on our new website.

To mark the anniversary, I shared a few reflections at a small dinner — now expanded into a
short post on building for individuals, not institutions. It reflects a shift in focus that many of us at DCI are exploring: how far we can take scalable, self-custodial Bitcoin infrastructure — to reach not just the next million users, but the next billion.

Best,
Neha
